I think the modern that is getting bashed are specifically shed roofs with a combination of Hardiboard and galvalume siding. Interestingly those are the exterior choices we made for our addition which has been featured in three magazines.

Of course, my wife and I now second guess our choice because it looks trendy to us now.

We did use Skiles Architects, and I can't recommend Albert and Lisa highly enough as far as great people to work with on a project.

Mix modern touches with this design just as they did with Founders Hall (Gothic) with modern touches on campus.
Meh. The picture you posted isn't Gothic, it's French Baroque (I think). That style really doesn't belong on our campus.

Collegiate Gothic, sure. I wouldn't mind more buildings in the style of Ozark Hall. It looks great with the new addition and renovation.

The problem with our campus is that it's been a mishmash of different architectural styles for a very long time. That problem has been compounded over the last 50 years. There is no way to remedy this problem.

Founders Hall is decent. I like the bay windows, casement windows, arched doorways, and sconces. Not a fan of the tan brick, but I'm guessing it was easier on the budget, and it 'fits in' with that part of campus.

I'm not sure what part of Founders is supposed to be modernist. I guess it's a really, really stripped down version of Collegiate Gothic with sparse ornamentation. The lack of ornamentation is probably the most modernist thing about it.

It gets the job done and fits in, but the design doesn't really blow me away. It's a hell of a lot better than most of the student housing, though.

Materials can definitely get trendy, but materials don't make an architectural style. What you described may indeed be a trend, but you can do modern with stone, plaster, and wood. Look at Frank Lloyd Wright and Fay Jones.

edit: but you know what's way trendier? Boring brick and stick subdivisions where all the houses look identical. In 30 years, whose house will look better? Yours will.

I'm totally with you. We're modernists through and through (hello ridiculous monthly sub to Dwell and Arch. Digest), but I do sometimes look at my stuff with a detached eye and second guess it. I, obviously, still prefer it to the vast majority of east side subdivision cookie cutters out there.

That is correct. I was not trying to correlate the two (Gothic and Baroque). Old Main blinds between the two and fall within a cousin family unlike this modern stuff.

I was simply implying this..

Correct. We can build some French Baroque and Gothic that is stripped down with more straight lines for modern touches.

This is the problem! It's our best present building and it's bare bones. It shows you how bad these up coming buildings will be..

Founders Hall isn't a landmark building, but at least it is respectful to the architecture of Gibson and Gregson.

I really dislike the Fine Arts building, but it is Edward Durell Stone, so the archi-nerds go apeshit for it. Carlson Terrace was also by Stone, and it was dogshit and rightfully bulldozed for tailgating space. The architecture school HATED that.

There are ways to remedy the architectural inconsistencies on campus. We just don't bother with it.

Kimpel is up for renovation. Guess what? They are choosing to restore it rather than renovate it. A brick, brutalist eyesore, and we are preserving it. I wouldn't mind Brutalist buildings more like the Arvest building downtown, (concrete and stone) but brick, stucco and dry-vit Brutalist buildings are almost universally dogshit.

I like our architecture rants.

This is my biggest beef. They (current heads) continue the problem instead of starting a process to eradicate.

Look at the 1925 campus plan. The Heads say in their report they are trying to follow through with this plan, Ha. The 1925 campus plan is badass and we are screwing it up.

There is no consensus in leadership to go for traditional styles of architecture. This is mainly due to the architecture school.

My personal preference is not to go all half-assed traditional-esque like some SEC campuses have gone. Some of Bama's renovations are spectacular, but some of their new buildings are actually borderline post-modernist approximations of old traditional archtiecture. I wouldn't want a campus with a portico on every doorstep.

I actually don't really care too much for the rear end of Mullins because it is post-modern. It approximates the limestone and stone columned architecture, but it has tiny square windows at the top and almost no ornamentation. I find it half-assed. Ozark Hall is wonderful, and the engineering building is up for the same treatment, and a new wing to be added.

Founders Hall is a-ok. It has some decorative touches, enough to bring it away from feeling post-modern. It compares very favorably with Gregson, IMO. There are cornices and stone flourishes throughout, and good doors and windows.

The NW Quad is another post-modern abortion. It mimics just enough of the traditional style to be annoying and half-assed. I'd almost rather see a Blackwell building there than some half-assed building like those.

I understand the history of the Architecture school however It's driven by egos with money instead following a master plan that was set forth over 85 years ago to make the University of Arkansas stick out among southern institutions.

Agreed. I loved seeing what they have done while at our 2010 game. However, I am for some parts of campus varying in difference and not having the whole campus identical. But goodness Arkansas, seriously, lets get with some uniformity.

This makes me very excited. Because for every two ugly modern buildings we.. "totally redeem ourselves"

with one beautiful expansion and renovation of the historic part of campus (Engineering building expansion and renovation).

I would donate to have Kimpel Hall tore down along with Barnhill (I know, all the memories but we need the space) I hated every single business class I took in that Kimpel dump.

Even if this addition of Founders happens..

Kimpel and that awful Soviet Structure (Hotz I think) is still present.

Founders hall is gorgeous. I wish we had more buildings like it on campus.

WMR, I agree with the butt end of Mullins. The front is do perfect but is now basically blocked by the new architecture building. No one even enters through the front anyways that I know of. The back is what everyone sees and it's hideous.

There is one negative about having this Arts district, and that's when you pick up one of these smoking hot women for some servicing and find out that she is hairy. I mean, they haven't seen a razor in 5 years hairy.

Yeah the new parking garage is going in right behind Grub's.

And instead of a parking lot, Yum Yum's kids will have more bars, restaurants and art.

All you neo traditional restorationists shoud be overjoyed that the old theater marquee over Sydney 's Emporium was returned to its spot today all shiny and new.

Personally I was hoping they'd paint the entire facade with black chalkboard paint and let people go nuts on it

That new classroom bldg in the ravine along Dickson is ok. the intention is for it to just kind of "hide" down in the hole, and not block any more of the mountain views from the greek theater. A modernist design makes sense there. It doesn't appear to be a bad building, IMO.

The parking garage needs two levels taken off the top to restore the mountain views it took away. Another garage of the same height could be constructed right next door (behind the present one) to add even more capacity than they have now. The other low-slung buildings in the ravine could take another story or two, honestly. They have flat roofs with exposed ductwork and venting. Its all related to the physical plant and the labs located there. Ugly stuff to have sitting right in the line of sight of the greek theater. The gt was placed where it is partially because of the sweeping mountain views there. We need to reclaim all of that we can.

Before the garage:

After, with the view fuct:

The difference is even more stark when the leaves are off the trees, which is most of the academic year.
Just put me in charge of the campus planning and I'll remedy everything that they've fricked up over the years.

Great thread, .

Only a few brief comments:
1) I hate yellow brick.
2) I don't like parking garages but don't see other options.
3) Would love to see a consistent master plan implemented.
4) I really don't like EIFS either.
5) I do like Lack of an aforementioned arch firm.
6) Love Old Main.
7) I like Ozark Hall too.
8) There are many (but not all) architects who see an unlimited budget and try to exceed it. Not to mention they cause unnecessary delays.
