I will remember him as a smart-assed douchebag who hates on other coaches when he's not on top.
As to the question - his career is not over. Coaching at South Carolina is part of his legacy now, and if he stays there a few more years and wins big, then it adds to his legacy and he might be remembered for his Gamecock years. If he stays and fails to get them over the hump, then it certainly won't be a big negative but it would factor into his legacy.
His run at Florida was remarkable. Not only did he finish on TOP of the conference so consistently, but he did it with a very powerful Tennessee team sitting right there every year. Peyton Manning never beat him. Incredible. But if we give him all the credit for not just winning, but finishing FIRST year after year, then we also have to look at the current SCar program and ask why he has taken them so far but hasn't gotten them to the top.
Honest answer. Perhaps a bit biased because of his personality, but I think I'm being fair.
