An 80-year-old man told NBC Channel 4 Wednesday that he shot and killed a pregnant woman who tried to rob him at his Long Beach home..
"She says, 'Don't shoot me, I'm pregnant -- I'm going to have a baby,'" the man, who was identified as Tom Greer, told the TV station.
He said he fired two rounds and that a man who was with her fled the scene. "I shot her twice. She best be dead," Greer said.
He said the couple tackled him and tried to ransack his home and take money from a safe. He said he shot the woman with a small .22-caliber revolver during the incident, which happened on Tuesday.

"The lady didn't run as fast as the man, so I shot her in the back twice," Greer said. "She's dead ... but he got away."

Self defense, gone too far? What say you?

Does the responsibility lie on the woman for putting herself in an extremely dangerous situation while pregnant(if she was telling the truth)?
Or could the man have handled the situation more peacefully if his life wasn't actually in danger?

A women trying to rob an 80 year-old shouldn't raise a child. I have no problem with this man shooting her.

Pregnant women shouldn't go around robbing people, it's harder for them to run away when things go wrong.
If you rob someone at their house, you are likely to get shot or worse, everybody in America should know the damn rules by now.

Shot her twice in the back? Yeah, that's murder and not self defense. She was running away. The threat was over.

If he was no longer in imminent danger, and from what I read he wasn't since the man had fled the scene and the woman was in the process of fleeing, then it's no longer self defense. It's murder.

Sometimes criminals "flee" in order to gain a tactical advantage from another angle. A decent lawyer can sell that to 12 people who don't wanna be robbed.
If you attack me, you are getting attacked back until you are out of sight or out of commission.

I don't feel bad for her at all, but I wouldn't have shot an unarmed pregnant woman while she was running away from me.

Apparently they've robbed him three times. This time they tackled him and broke his collarbone. Maybe next time they would have broken his neck or back. frick it they learned the hard way.

She had her chance. She could have, oh I don't know, not participated in home burglaries as a pregnant woman. Pregnant with a child and robbing an 80 year old man. She wouldn't have hesitated to kill him, me or you if she was robbing us and had the chance.
The 80 year old man did society a service. If there were more like him, we'd have a shite load less crime.

I hope that guy spends the next few years of his life getting raped to death.

He shot her in the back, twice.
In reality, with his admission that she obviously relented and was fleeing, this man murdered this woman.

I know I'm late to the party, but here goes...
How was the guy to know the woman wasn't lying? I'm sorry, but "I'm pregnant" isn't a get-out-of-jail-free card.
The couple tackles this dude, and both are running later. Is he supposed to just take them at their word?

as i said on the OT, the only thing the old man did wrong was admit to doing it. He should have double tapped the filthy animal and then kept silent

My thoughts are:
1) I don't feel bad for the girl. If she didn't want to get shot, she shouldn't have tried to rob him.
2) From an outsider's perspective, he probably shouldn't have shot her.
I tend to give the man the benefit of the doubt though for a few reasons:
1) He's 80. He's more vulnerable to attack than most people and will be more aggressive in defending himself, especially if these same people have robbed him before.
2) In a practical sense, the killing range of a .22 isn't very far, so she very well could have been close enough to him for him to still be threatened, even if she said she was running. Don't know all the facts on that one.
3) He had already been robbed by these people multiple times, as had others in his neighborhood. The police had shown themselves to be worthless in stopping it. At a certain point, you have to stand up for yourself.
4) He's an old man who had just had people break into his house, knock him to the floor, and steal his things. The expectation of rational thought is unreasonable IMO.
I'd probably charge him with some sort of minor assault charge. He doesn't deserve to go to jail for this IMO, as long as he's never been a danger to society before.
