What If Schools Were Sorted Based on Football Strength?
The Big 5
quote:
To do that, Jonathan Jensen and Brian Turner chose to ignore geography and tradition, the typical forces in conference realignment. Instead, they focused solely on football and its financial implications, coming up with a formula that factored in every team's football revenue, winning percentage, computer ranking and attendance between 2003 and 2013. Then they sorted teams into clusters to figure out which schools were most alike—and should be playing each other.
quote:
The 10 teams that were most similar to each other, and far stronger than all other teams, were Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana State, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma and Texas.
The Big 5

But there were some surprises in their analysis. They found that not all teams in top conferences deserved to be with their current peers. Boise State and Brigham Young would be promoted up, while 23 schools would be relegated, including Arizona, Baylor and Mississippi State.

Stanford would rape Cluster 3

I assume ND still ranks pretty high on all of these despite their fall from grace over the last couple of decades.

so I'm guessing he is suggesting Southern Cal should be relegated?

I would imagine the fact that they were just in the title game two years ago as well would have something to do with it. They may have had a mediocre stretch their, but they are still one of the premier programs in the country.

But then again, FSU is in Cluster Two.

They've had 3 10+ win seasons since Holtz's last year at ND, as many as we've had in that same time span. Give us that 2012 schedule of theirs and we'd be sitting in that title game.

this sounds like a giant cluster

I think we would have a shot at winning that cluster. This is like the EPL, you would have to work your way into cluster 1 to compete for a national championship.
