This should tell you all you need to know about the "city" of Columbia.

Cary pop: 145,693
Columbia pop: 131,686
Charleston pop: 120,083

That's a bit disingenuous...

Cary total pop: 151k
Columbia city pop: 133k
Columbia urban pop: 549k
Columbia Metro pop: 793k
Columbia CSA pop: 922k
Charleston city pop: 127k
Charleston urban pop: 548k
Charleston metro pop: 712k

It's a dump. Main part of USCe campus is decent, though.

disclaimer: georgia got their fricking arse kicked when i went to columbia. everyone has both good and bad experiences with cities and my experience is just one example, so it is not to be taken as anything other than shitty anecdotal evidence.

anyways, i thought it was pretty damn below average. tailgating and pregame were both pretty solid, honestly. after the game, though, it took fricking forever to get to the bars because they are so far away. then we got to the bars and police officers came in and everyone just left (i assume it was the underage folks). that happened at 2 different places. just not a good bar scene really.

getting a cab was pretty shitty as well because they wouldnt let us in a cab that had other people in it. i dunno how normal that is for college towns, but in athens that is not at all the case.

the fans were also giant dickheads dumping beer and shite on us left and right. that just made everything exponentially worse. any good interactions were completely soured by the numerous pieces of shite we encountered.

Dude. You were in a stadium filled with tens of thousands of Gamecocks who have lived lives filled with memories of heartbreaks and arse kickings at the hands of UGA. It was a top 10 matchup and for the 1st time we were the ones delivering the arse kicking to UGA.. something no Gamecock has ever seen. The crowd was naturally going to be bigger, rowdier and generally more hostile.

Ask most fan bases, we're as hospitable, if not more hospitable than any other respectable fan base.. but given the context there is no way anyone was going to walk around in a UGA shirt that night and not catch attitude.

If you wanna play with numbers, the population of Cary's CSA is 1,998,808.

All this has nothing to do with the size of the actual municipality.

And anyway, Columbia, Mo. is superior in every way. OP should just go there instead.

From what I am gathering, Columbia is a lot like Baton Rouge.

Typical checkerboard neighborhoods, like most major cities in the South struggle with

I grew up in SC and a lot of my friends either graduated from or are about to graduate from USC.

I don't really think there is much too special about the city of Columbia, but I've always had an absolute blast when I've went there for UK games (either football or basketball).

I've always found gameday to be a blast. I will say that the stadium is a LONG arse way from any real bar scene. Further than any other school I've been to. It's great before the game, but after the game when you're looking to go out it's tough.

However 5 points can be fun, and the Vista is always a good time. Overall I enjoy Columbia and will certainly return.

No. A lot of people really shite on it, calling it the "armpit of the south," but I don't think it's as bad as all that. But, it's not great. That's not to say you won't have a great time, because you will.

We're the true capital of the South, historically, since about midway through the war of northern aggression. We didn't surrender ... the bastard Sherman burned us out.

I've always heard the "armpit" term referring to B-ham and Tallahassee.

Listen, we've all got our warts. Raleigh-Durham is a total dump IMHO. Knoxville ain't no Shangra La. Gainesville has its issues as does Baton Rouge, Tuscaloosa, etc.

Columbia, SC has garnered its fair share of All-American City awards over the years. We get compared to Charleston a lot but that's not really fair considering Charleston is always listed as one of the nicest places to live in the U.S. yetno one ever mentions North Charleston in the same sentence.

Are you seriously trying to compare the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hell-Cary metroplex to Columbia? Well, frick, by these standards let's compare Chicago to Tupelo. Or DC to Johnson City. It's comparing apples to hand grenades.

I like Columbia for what it is. A medium-sized Southern city/capital with a large university and more than its share of history. If you go expecting to see Dallas, well, you're SOL.

No... The Raleigh-Durham CSA has a population of 2 million. Cary, a "town" in that CSA, has a 150k population.

Now I know you're full of something... I just passed through Missouri and couldn't tell you what Columbia, MO even looks like. It looked like every other blot on a cow pasture that we passed. You notice the cities in Missouri (KC and St. Louis)... Columbia, MO isn't even a blip on the horizon.

Of course you couldn't. The interstate does not pass through the middle of Columbia, Mo. Its beauty has been preserved.

Folks from South Carolina know a blot when they see it, I would agree.

-----
Though it has been transforming itself into a hotbed of manufacturing, with companies such as Boeing and BMW opening manufacturing facilities, South Carolina has the nation’s fifth highest violent crime rate. Its murder rate of 6.9 per 100,000 is the fifth worst in the country. Its aggravated assault rate is the third worst. Roughly 25 percent have bachelor’s degrees, among the nation’s lowest figures.

Can be, unfortunately. And it's often a generational, ingrained racism that will smile and share a beer out of one side of the mouth, then demean and spite out of the other. Which is really baffling and can be even worse than blatant, in-your-face racism (sometimes...). But there's racism all over.

Nor does it pass through the middle of Columbia, SC, dummy.

It is NOT a nice city. It is a very fun city and there are some very nice parts. As one person said, its nearest counterpart is probably Baton Rouge. I'd add that it's a bit more centralized than Baton Rouge.
