As for AU, we got trolled as well. Unlike TAMU, we at least got an undefeated season out of it.

If we are speaking of coaches in general, it's Bob Connelly by a country mile. The offensive lines under Shula were pitiful. Ellis Johnson was a pretty terrible defensive coordinator too in the late 90s under Dubose. The front 7 was alright, but the secondaries were dog shite.

Gotta be Dubose for me. He won a SECC, but was personally flawed and allowed events to take place that got us on probation. Shula gets a pass because he took the job when we were a mess.

Shula would have won 6-8 games a year with the odd 9 or 10 game winner. His Bama teams lost by double digits 8 times in 4 years with 3 of those happening his first season.
Dubose teams suffered double digit losses 12 times in four years. He also inherited a team that tied for 1st in the west with 10 wins in 1996 and managed to win 4 games in 1997.
Oh, and also Albert Means.
Outside of Ears Whitworth, Mike Dubose is probably the worst head coach in Alabama history.

Croom was horrible. You guys can "he was a good man" all you want, he was horrible. He came in with this "clean it up" attitude, which he did, but he was over his head coaching in the SEC.
Ellis Johnson's defense gave him an 8-win season or he would have been gone a year earlier.
The fact that Sly Croom beat Nick Saban is one of the pieces of college football unbelievable trivia.
Croom wanted to coach Alabama. Alabama dodged a bullet by not hiring him. Croom came in, made us look like a maroon version of Alabama with plain jerseys and double stripe pants. Rumor is he wanted maroon helmets with numbers on the side and the athletic director nixed it.
He was always talking about the Bear. It was weird. When he beat Alabama that time, I thought he was going to lose it. Was very good at making other teams like him. "You guys are in good shape with Croom," said the LSU fan after beating us 47-0. "Love your coach. He's a good guy," said the Auburn fan after beating us 42-0.
But it was laughable how over his head he was. He would panic if it looked like we were going to win the game. 4th quarter at Georgia one year - we are down by 2 and driving. 4th and 2 at the Georgia 40. He decides to go for it and we make it. 3 plays later, we have 4th and 1 at the Georgia 30 and he punts.
It was baffling.
And he also coached in the 3-2 game.

Ears Whitworth was atrocious, but Dubose was a failure in multiple arenas. Dubose was the curse that keeps on cursing.

Didn't Whitworth only get to hire two of his assistants while all the rest got to stay on from the last regime? He gets a raw deal in history IMO.

He had two winning seasons in 7 years of coaching and was 22-27-1 before coming to Alabama - where he won a total of 4 games in 3 seasons to finish his carrer at 26-51-4.
The fact that nobody killed his trees or teabagged his arse proves that he got far better treatment than he deserved.

Probably John L Smith and I liked the guy as a person, but not as a coach.
John L would probably be on the ballot of many Michigan St fans as well.

It is a tough call between Mike Archer and Curley Hallman. They were both terrible but considering that he was handed a very good team with a solid foundation that we completely allowed to go to shite, I will have to go with Mike Archer.

I completely agree. I really believe Croom was a good guy, but his coaching sucked big time. That offense we ran, or attempted to, was pitiful. I love how we'd call time out to avoid a delay of game, and then come out of the time out and get a delay. Some of that clock mismanagement was worse than a 7th grade junior high team. I actually thank Ole Miss and Nutt for beating the piss out of us 45-0 in '08, or he'd probably have been back again. He lost to freakin' Maine. He also lost to La Tech, UAB, Vandy( for the first time in almost 20 years),and Tulane. It was bad.
