It's a winning thing, same stuff went on with Coach
Bryant era, you just hear about it more because of all
the social media.

You notice you never heard of much of anything during the Shula years. Most of the
fans you hear about like Updyke are losers in real life so they latch on to something that makes them
feel like a winner.

Some just jump on the wagon when
Bama is winning then jump off when Bama is losing. Had a
friend in HS who acted like a Bama fan, then Bama lost
two or three games to Auburn he burnt all his Bama gear and started wearing Auburn gear. Then
when Bama started winning again he went back to wearing Bama stuff.

So while Bama is winning
this stuff will keep on happening. Just can't let
it get to you.

Characteristics of a Fan
Fans usually have a strong enough interest that some changes in their lifestyles are made to accommodate devotion to the focal object. Fans have a desire for external involvement – they are motivated to demonstrate their involvement with the area of interest through certain behaviors (attending conventions, posting online, displaying team banners outside their homes, etc.). Fans often have a "wish to acquire" material objects related to the area of interest, such as a baseball hit by a famous slugger or a used guitar pick from their musical hero. As well, some fans have a desire for social interaction with other fans. This again may take many forms, from casual conversation, e-mail, chat rooms, and electronic mailing lists to regular face-to-face meetings such as fan club meetings and organized conventions.

There are several groups of fans that can be differentiated by the intensity level of their level of involvement or interest in the hobby (level of fanaticism)[2] The likelihood for a subject of interest to be elevated to the level of fandom appears to be dictated by its complexity. Complexity allows further involvement of fans for a longer period of time because of the time needed to work the subject of interest 'out.' It also contributes to a greater sense of belonging because of the mental effort invested in the subject

There is nothing wrong with wearing a t-shirt or shopping at wal-mart. Congratulations on being a douche.

And an arrogant douche at that. Everyone has fans that do stupid things. Look at the damned NFL and some of the ridiculous getups you see some of those fans wear..to the stadiums and out in public. They look like some kind of mix between Mad Max and a Pro Wrestler.

Just what would anyone propose to do something about it? The reason you hear about these things is every time anything negative goes on concerning Alabama, you have the sit in Mom's basement and monitor the Net 24-7 crowd pick up on it and run here to count coup.

To me, that is even sadder than what they report on. Because their team can't beat Alabama they have to compensate for that or a short penis or something. Don't sweat it.

Just pray for that people understand there is more to life than football, even though, that's hard to imagine for me also.

Anyone else notice that alcohol seems to be present in most every one of these incidents?

Teabagger was in NOLA in the middle of night, so we know he was wasted.

Harvey looks like he puts vodka in his cereal.

Mett's mugger was in a bar.

and so on and so on.

Hell, the running of the gumps looks like the same crowd from talladega, so I'm positive that if they're camping out near the stadium they are gonna have plenty of beer and whiskey.

I will say this. I am sure it happens but I have seen none of the harassment of opposing fans in TTown that I have on the road. No cars getting keyed. No dropping things on them from the top of the stadium.

No screaming things similar to "Tiger Bait". Etc. Etc.

Its funny. Our fringe fans are more lone wolf nutjobs. That's why you don't see us treat opposing fans that way or riot when we win. This is also why I wish there would be more of an effort to shame the loons because it really does give the rest of us a bad name.

I know some of you don't care about the image, but I guess one day Coach Saban will be gone and we'll want to attract someone who can continue the success. Only so many people can handle the fishbowl that is Alabama Football and some of these loons only make things tougher at times.

I'll agree with the OP in that it does seem to be getting worse. But there's nothing that can be done about it as far as I know. I just shake my head and wish people would behave like decent adults

And while our program does have a spotlight on it, we have plenty of nutjobs willing to jump in that spotlight unfortunately

I still contend everyone has them. We just have opposing fans that make sure ours get publicized. Not to mention hacks like Larry Leo, Finebaum and Clay Travis.

Of course they do...but I don't think there's any doubt that we have a greater number than any other fanbase.

I don't know if its getting worse or becuase of social media you have every idiot rival fan running to places like the Rant to post about it. Some of the same LSU and AU posters on the main board continue to fan the flames.

Alabama has no professional team and given the incredible suuccess built up over deacdes and our current run, we are the defacto NFL team. Therefore, we pick up a lot of the same types you would see in the endzone at a Raiders game and some of these people are volatile.

I find all of this pretty ironic since I have typically seen more bad behavior from opposing SEC fans i.e. TN, LSU, and AU, than I have ever seen out of Bama fans. There is nothing we can really do about and the trolls are going to troll.

The whole thing with Zach Mettenburger. It's just one of the many, many examples of the crazy shite our fans do.

There has to more to this story. If someone sucker punches me for no reason in a bar you can bet I am pressing charges. The owner is covering for Mett. Not saying it was all Mett's fault, but you don't just let that go if you did nothing to help incite it.

It's probably not much worse than it ever was, you just have trolls from other fanbases monitoring for things.

Other fanbases haven't had to monitor for anything. Updyke called in to Finebaum to brag about what he had done because he wanted attention. When the limelight started to fade, he showed up at Bama sporting events to get more attention. The teabagger? He bragged about what he had done on social media leading to his own arrest. Same with the Aggie construction worker, bragged on social media. These idiots all begged for the spotlight regardless of how poorly it reflected on the fanbase.

Yep. And the nutjobs who sprint across the field at Fan Day so they can get Saban's autograph, despite the fact that they already have 20, also do it for selfish reasons. These losers latch on to UA Football because they see it as some chance to grab 15 minutes of fame.

Should be repeated. They would get bored with their troll threads when they become nothing but little circle jerks among themselves. Instead some of our fans are keeping the threads going by engaging. Don't get drug down to the level of the trolls and "never to yield" types on the SECRant. Talk football, ignore the trolls about Alabama.

There is a tendency for people to define themselves by the team they cheer for, which means they also try to define others by their chosen team. I am not a millionaire and I am not an Alum,so I am by definition a sidewalk fan. I should add that while the aforementioned crimes against the Capstone are true I am also a Carpet-bagger. But, I love Alabama football and I love working at the Capstone and I assign zero significance to what others think.

Speaking of that, is it me or are the LSU Fans on the SECR going a little overboard with the McElroy-Miles stuff? They are coming out of the woodwork over there.

Yes. They are blowing that little incident way out of proportion. It's the offseason, so there is little to talk about so it's understandable I guess. Again, they continue to do so because of the reaction they get from some Bama fans.
