I don't think $10M/yr for 10 years is outside the realm of possibility considering Bama is paying him $6.9 and UTA is paying Strong (their likely 3rd or 4th choice) $5M
with his alleged signing bonus, it's more like 11.5 million a year. With performance bonuses, which I would imagine be at least a half a million for a national title, that number grows even more. I just don't see anyone turning down an offer that effectively doubles your current salary. I'm sure Texas can afford it, but I just really doubt that they actually offered it and Saban turned it down. I think it's just Texas boosters trying to save face and maintain their enormous egos.

I don't get that argument. I mean, I get the braggadocio bit -- "Hey, we have lots of money!" -- but the other part makes no sense. Why on earth would they make up a claim that demonstrated that they tried to throw all that money at someone and he still told them to go frick themselves? What's the benefit of bragging about how you can't even lure a coach to your program with $100 million? The only conclusion that leads to is that your program has fallen so far that one-tenth of a billion dollars isn't enough to get who you want. It's like bragging that the head cheerleader turned you down for the prom despite you offering to buy her a new Maserati if she'd go. It just makes you seem like you must be really repulsive.
