Why is service so slow at some restaurants?

Sounds about right. But who the hell takes selfies with a waiter?
Don't answer that.

I get why this would cause a longer wait, but it doesn't explain slower service.
Taking longer to get ready to order and taking longer to eat doesn't consume the waiter's time.
Asking for five minutes for a photo does, but seriously, a waiter should be willing to snap a quick photo and decline anything else. 30 seconds tops. Whiners will whine, let them go elsewhere.
The point of this article is to blame patrons for slow service, but I don't buy it. Longer waits, absolutely. Slow service, nope.

It really depends on what the average consumer considers as "slow service". When a lot of people complain they tend to include wait time for a table on that. And taking that much time to order can affect that.

People expect 5 star quality with fast food timing. Unless you're ordering from a counter, it will tale some time to prepare food.

I worked in restaurants while I was in college. A lot of times the waiters are so slammed that they don't place the order right away. So many times they would completely forget to place the order and have to run to the kitchen and beg the cooks to move their ticket to the front of the line.

When a server has to keep returning to your table because people are taking a long time to order, it eats into their timing and efficiency. Camping customers also drink more (like soda and water) which increases the trips for the server...
Customers who are slow to move the process along will sometimes get worse service because the server gets caught up in helping all their other tables...

Bingo. When I was a server my personal rule was if you were talking on your cell phone you didn't have your order taken.

I would imagine it's a timing thing as well. You try to turnover tables efficiently so you can get more folks seated with a lesser wait time. And the issues in the OP would likely frick with that.

I don't believe this article. I know taking pics of food is a fad, but this is nuts. I don't observe anything this extreme and I go to some pretty "hip" joints in downtown Chicago.

26 out of 45 customers spend an average of 3 minutes taking photos of the food.
14 out of 45 customers take pictures of each other with the food in front of them or as they are eating the food. This takes on average another 4 minutes as they must review and sometimes retake the photo.
9 out of 45 customers sent their food back to reheat. Obviously if they didn't pause to do whatever on their phone the food wouldn't have gotten cold.
27 out of 45 customers asked their waiter to take a group photo. 14 of those requested the waiter retake the photo as they were not pleased with the first photo. On average this entire process between the chit chatting and reviewing the photo taken added another 5 minutes and obviously caused the waiter not to be able to take care of other tables he/she was serving.
