Pan Am was more like an institution than an airline. They were the launch customer for the 707 and the 747. Women everywhere dreamed of being a stewardess for Pan American World Airways, but few lived up to the criteria. Definitely the golden age of air travel.

Even though the flying experience is nothing like it was, air travel is much much safer today then it was back then. Like some of the other airlines of the time, Pan Am had more than its share of takeoffs without landings.

It's pretty challenging for airlines to be profitable these days. The number of seats that have to be sold to make a flight profitable is eye-opening
