1979 deserves one of those "other receiving votes". Truly outstanding game. Then #1 Alabama defeated #17 or so (AP) Auburn, 25-18 in one of the hardest fought, clean games I've ever attended.
Two strange things, before and after, about that game are had Alabama lost to Auburn, they would have still been co-champs in the SEC at 5-1 with Georgia. However, even after a scare the prior year the SEC and Sugar Bowl failed to tinker with their 'repeat' rules. Having been to the Sugar in 1978 (well, Jan '79), Georgia would have been the SEC's representative. 6-5 Georgia, who only won one non-conference game. Alabama would have gone to the Fiesta, which was 100 miles from what it is now.
