I considered 1985 for bama, but it just was not an important game and importance is part of naming the "greatest". Neither team was great in 1985 and nothing was on the line for either.

Same reason 1982 and 1989 didn't make the AU list though their importance to AU are right at the top of the list.

Well there's your problem.

You're a game on the schedule, and generally the IB isn't a terribly important game in the national scheme of things for both teams at the same time.

Other than "you can't afford to lose this game", but that would be the same circumstance regardless of whom the opponent was in the last regular season game of the year.

Well, yeah. That is exactly why 1982 and 1985 are not on the list. No national importance.

1989 had national importance, but bama wasn't very competitive after halftime.

1989 would bump the 1971 game on the bama list if the roles were reversed, but their isn't room for it on the AU list.

And really 1993 would bump a game on the bama list as well with both teams being top ten and AU undefeated and bama with 1 loss, if the roles were reversed (bama winning).

The AU list is tougher to get on though.
