I thought Royal was the year after, but I guess I confused myself because Broyles announced first then Royal followed. Both had 5-5-1 records their last season, both as a result of injury plagued seasons (Arkansas was using a DB converted to QB by the end of the season), both spent the majority of their time and won the majority of their games while both were in the SWC.
Other things that stood out in those games aired:
Broyles used helmet stickers in '76. Not a big deal, but I always heard it was a Holtz thing and the use of them today is kinda "taboo" with the old frickers because "Broyles didn't do that", cept he did.
Arkansas has played in the Longest football game in history, twice, the 7 OT games, we knew that. But Arkansas has also played in the shortest football game (That I'm aware of) in 76, Texas' clock "broke" and only 11 minutes was played in the first quarter, The refs didn't want to make it up in other 3 quarters after the mistake was discovered, Royal didn't want too, Frank had a IDGAF attitude about it.
Another thing that stood out was TTU and Houston were both ranked in the top10 after winning the SWC in 76. I'm sure if more research was done, you would find the SWC to have a current "SEC" like presence in the polls back in the 60s-80s to use against those who think the SEC has always been as dominant as it is today. Most likely you would see the SEC being pretty far behind the SWC, Big8, Big10, and Pac8 back then as it was literally only Bama competing on a national scale while the rest of the conferences had 2-3 teams each year.
