Athens proper doesn't have a go-to bbq joint anymore.

Since you are on company dime, go to The National and sit at the bar, get there a little early as it gets busy and you'd need a reservation to get a table, and people crowd the bar while waiting for their reservation. Get there at 6pm ish. Order a Creature Comfort tropicale, brewed across the street. Ignore the menu unless something really jumps out at you. I usually order whatever the special is, and it has never disappointed. The owner is a regular judge on Top Chef, Hugh Atchison. He owns another great place just outside of downtown called Five and Ten, but I prefer The National.
