I never saw Tarkenton play, but I always got the impression that he did most of his work as a pro. His college stats aren't extraordinary by any means, even for his time.
ETA: After a second look, his stats are good, but I don't know if I would call them revolutionary in college.

Let's say that it wasn't a passing league back then. I think he led the conference in attempts in his 3 seasons at UGA.
