Per Matter article, the last coaches' contracts ran on June 30 (yesterday) so I'm sure that played a role in the timing. Hopefully, it also means that GP has known for quite some time and was just letting the contract run its course while interviewing/talking to possible replacements.

Or it could be like it is with pro players. They're mulling it over and aren't certain themselves until training camp rolls around. Then it hits them like a ton of bricks that they aren't willing to commit to the long hours and sacrifices required for the job anymore. Hopefully, the staff was fully aware.

It's also possible that he made his wishes known and Pinkel's been working him to stay on. Then as the deadline came, the decision was finally set in stone.

I'd be surprised if it were a bolt out of the blue.
