Apparently immediately and they'll be looking for a replacement for this season. Wow.

Why would he do it at this time? Why not announce immediately after the Cotton Bowl or at least wait out this season? To retire just two months before a big season is (my opinion) unprofessional.

Makes me wonder if he and Pinkel had a falling out, or if he feels that he's no longer needed.

Imo there really is no "good" timing for a coach to leave. Just before the season is bad, midseason is bad, just after the season just before signing day is bad, during spring practice is bad, this might actually be the best time when you think about it, at least for a position coach.
