Another year wouldn't have hurt, that's for sure. People overestimate how much money you get as an UDFA or a D-league player. NBA minimum, if you get a full season contract is only $507,336. The D-league is a joke:
With ten players per team, that's an average D-League salary of $17,300. For more, see below:
Salaries remain flat: $25,500, $19,000 and $13,000 for the league's three player classifications, which means D-League players are virtually playing for free -- and a modest per diem on the road of $40 compared to $120 in the NBA -- although they do receive housing and insurance benefits. The D-League also employs a per-team salary cap of $173,000 ... with a dollar-for-dollar luxury tax, just like in the NBA, for teams that go over that amount. Foreign teams that want to pull players out of the D-League must pay $40,000, $45,000 or $50,000, depending on the player's classification, to buy out their D-League deals.
So if Brown or Clarkson don't make a roster, they are playing for virtually nothing, and they don't have degrees. It made much more sense to come back and work on the things that were pointed out in evaluations and try to work up to a higher draft pick. These kids are fed bad advice and it just kills me to watch it.

This is one reason I have a hard time getting into CBB anymore.
Too many of these guys leave early, and then end up looking foolish. Sure, maybe his draft stock wouldn't have gotten any better, but at least by staying another year Brown would have helped the team he played for, and gotten closer to earning a degree, or, gasp, actually earned a degree.
Between the transfers and the guys leaving early it really feels like these guys are just AAU players working towards making some money playing somewhere. I understand that "making it" is the ultimate goal, but it just kinda seems like a lot of these guys don't understand how to "make it". That's kind of what college is supposed to teach.

I'm betting going to class and making grades to get his degree wasn't very high on his list of 'want to do's'
