AP poll (official poll) came out prior to bowl games.

The football writers of America poll was one of the ones that was considered viable for the national championship back then. They listed us. The NCAA has us and Minnesota listed as national champions in 1960. You're a virgin.

There was no "Official" poll until the BCS. Back in those days Grantland Rice, FWAA, etc were every bit as prestigious as AP & UPI. And they were done after the bowl games.

That's why prior to BCS, there were MNC, not NC. No prior polls were recognized by the NCAA. So these "gotcha" posts & such show a tremendous ignorance of the game's history.
