JHMO... expansion needs to fit this criteria:

- new TV markets, should bring something new to the table
- since we are the SOUTHeastern conference, should be a geographical fit, preferably contiguous to current footprint
- doesn't cannibalize existing team strengths
- solid academic profile
- comprehensive sports programs with good history
- no schools smaller than current members, public schools preferred, "regional" not really an option

With that criteria list in mind...

Won't Work:

Overlapping markets: Memphis, Southern Miss, Florida State, Clemson, Georgia Tech, Louisville - note: Florida and Texas are so big that a market overlap might still work for a VERY major school
Too small or private: Wake Forest, Duke, Tulane, Rice
Just can't see a fit here- either markets or academics: Memphis, Southern Miss, South Florida, Central Florida
Political problems: Texas (will never go where Texas A&M is), Okla St. and Oklahoma are tied together

Might work:

North Carolina -OR- NC State
Virginia -OR- Virginia Tech
Maryland
Texas - OR - Baylor -OR- Houston - OR- TCU
Cincinnati
Miami

IMHO expansion plans should go for NC State and Virginia Tech, and move Missouri to the West.

Virginia/Virginia Tech and UNC/NC State fit all those criteria

No, just left for the Big Ten

Texas - OR - Baylor -OR- Houston - OR- TCU

No to all four for different reasons.

Texas cannot play by rules they don't set. That's been proven multiple times across multiple conferences. They would NEVER subordinate themselves to Birmingham. Not to mention the leash ESPN has them on.

Baylor and TCU are small private schools.

Houston is a commuter school at best and isn't even in the top 200 of USNWR
