SCAR is ranked number one in college basketball in '70 I believe it was, ahead of perennial #1 UCLA. We go, 25-3, 14-0 in ACC conference play but lose the ACC tourney championship and do not get invited to the big dance.

How is that even possible?

Back then there were only 24 teams invited to The Dance, most of them tourney champs from their conferences. The ACC tourney champ that year was NC State so they were the only team from the ACC allowed to attend.

It's one of the reasons we decided to leave the ACC and go independent.

The irony of it was that we actually hosted the NCAA East regional in Columbia that year. We still finished third in the polls, if I remember correctly, and UCLA won the championship again by beating the Jacksonville Dolphins and Artis Gilmore.
