Also, why should tourney champs in baseball get auto bids.

That's a long time honored tradition in the NCAA that is never going to change. I agree, it should change, but it never will, not in college ball of any sort.

Two extreme examples ...

SCAR is ranked number one in college basketball in '70 I believe it was, ahead of perennial #1 UCLA. We go, 25-3, 14-0 in ACC conference play but lose the ACC tourney championship and do not get invited to the big dance.

NC State, Jim Valvano's miracle year, '83 was it? 17-10 regular season, 8-6 in conference play, they win the ACC tourney and proceed to win the National Championship over Phi Slamma Jamma of Houston ... thus re-enforcing the Conference Tourney Champ tradition of the NCAA.

I remember a few years ago in baseball, Cal St Fullerton had a horrible regular season, caught fire in their tournament and won it, made the NCAAs, ended-up winning the national championship by beating us in the semi finals and Texas in the finals. I think that was the CWS where CSF's pitcher threw 300 pitches in two consecutive games combined to beat us and then Texas, and afterwards Augie showed his arse and refused to come out and shake hands.

How is that even possible?
