The top basketball players rarely stay close to home. For instance, in 2013 of the Rivals top 150 basketball players only 39 stayed in the state they graduated HS. Contrast that to the Rivals 100 in FB for 2013 where 69 players stayed in state.

Football players typically stay close to home, especially when there is a big program close to home. The best HS football players are, on average, black and there are a lot more black high schoolers in the south. Its pretty simple.

Basketball is also different in that great shooting and fundamentals will beat athleticism pretty regularly due to the nature of the game. The team with more raw talent wins football games a large majority of the time. Nobody is ever gonna make a run at the CFB title these days with a majority white roster.
