Mark Richt is entering his 14th season at Georgia. He has been one of the most consistent winners in the SEC in the last 10 years, but has failed to produce a National Championship team.

However, I applaud Georgia for being patient, giving him time that too few programs do nowadays. Some of the greatest coaches in history took many years to win their first national championship, but unfortunately, most programs would have fired them:

Tom Osborne- 22 years
Joe Paterno- 17 years
Bobby Bowden- 17 years at FSU (27 total)
Don James- 17 years at Washington (21 total)
Vince Dooley- 17 years

There are probably more... these are just the ones who come to mind. It seems that year 17 is the year to win it. I think if Georgia keeps him, they'll win a championship within the next 10 years.

... but the rant told me that if he hasn't won one yet, he never will.

ETA - truthfully I wasn't really sure how to respond to this thread

His is the only notable program in a state with more talent per capita than any in the country. He should have done more by now.

Georgia has had some terrible luck whereas some other SEC teams to win titles during the Richt years have had some great luck. Nothing you can do about that

Schembechler and Fry, patience was not rewarded with a National Title.

I'm hoping Les can be one of those with 15-18 years.

Not a national championship coach, but Beamer should be considered elite, and I don't think he had a winning record at Tech till year 6. That would never happen now.
Richt is a great coach, a little bad luck and playing in the best conference in the history of college football.

He's taken UGA to their maximum potential in this day and age IMO. When recruits from your home state grow up not wanting to attend their home state school you're already at a huge competitive disadvantage, and he's been able to rise above that and still win the east a few times. They would be lucky to keep him another 10 years with his current trends of success.

He is 2nd in the SEC in wins since 01, 4th in wins among BCS teams, has 6 east titles, and 2 SEC titles.

I don't see how anyone at Ga.lets a guy like that go.

It seems to me that the elephant in the room is that had the new playoff been in place at any point in the Richt's tenure at UGA; this conversation would be completely moot. Richt and his teams have had a struggle to finish within the top 2 during the BCS era. However finishing in the top 4 while on a hot streak, seems to be something he has been able to accomplish numerous times. I think with the playoff now in place, you could see Richt get to a title sooner rather than later. Of course, this is just one mans opinion, and I am sure, not the opinion of the community at large.

Richt's problem is he has never been able to put together a complete team. And the reason he has never had a complete team:
1. Top 10 recruiting when top 5 is needed. We often miss on key instate prospects.
2. Lack of daily ongoing discipline. This leads to inadequate performance on and off the field.
3. Poor roster management. We never have a full roster compared to our competition because Richt does not recruit allowing for inevitable attrition which has been considerable on all of his squads.

You're a pretty good poster IMO, so I will take the post at face value in saying; "he's better than a lot of coaches" and he was hamstrung by a bad school president and social experiment of an athletic director for a lot of his tenure.

I think we are building a better ship and crew for this next venture into the uncharted waters of the first 4+1 season.

However the LSU fan will be talking college baseball by the end of October this season.

I honestly don't think it takes a great coach to win a NC. Hell, Les miles did it and while he is a very good coach, he is far from great. If Richt ever got a game changer (i.e. Tebow, Manziel, Cam Newton) I think he could pull it off. What makes Bama so successful every year is a great core of RB's, a NFL caliber defense every year and a hard nosed defensive minded coach who doesn't coddle his players. It is a recipe for success. Player's coaches like Miles and Richt will always be successful, but you have to be tough on these kids to keep them focused for an entire season to win it all. Just my 2 cents.

I believe that winning a Natty takes a lot of luck. First, you have to have at least a couple of classes in your 4-5 on campus that are top 10 and the rest at least top 25, but other than that you need the chips to fall your way.

Richt has done a good job of keeping Georgia in striking distance. All he needs is that lucky season to come his way. He's just been terribly unlucky so far. I think it'll eventually happen for him. I'll be happy for him and Georgia for having stuck it out when it does.
