They'll probably replace them with a "similar" opponent, just like in the mid-90's.

Actually LSU didn't replace A&M with a 'similar opponent', they replaced them with a better opponent: Arkansas.
The only reason A&M got bent out of shape over the deal is because their replacement for LSU was USL - who beat A&M.
