Seems the groundwork for this was lain with at least B1G, PAC, and Bevo12 conferences in recent years with the opening/early games that have been scheduled (LSU, Miss St, Bama, Ole Miss, etc). Groundwork with ACC schools has been in place because of some of the East matchups.
Agreed, this "groundwork" now probably needs to be turned into something more concrete. It's probably not a problem. If push comes to shove I can see, for example, the Big XII wanting a Iowa St to play Miss St for exposure reasons alone (works both ways).
Only hiccup could come if some of the big-5 conferences decide that they are on a 9 game conf schedule and aren't going to look for stiffer competition. New playoff format will help with that some however.

Not the ACC. They are the low hanging fruit.
Or maybe the AAC depending on the cutoff of major conference.
