I'm going to be building myself a small home as soon as I find the land I want. I wanna make it as energy efficient as possible. I'm even gonna try to find a piece of land with a spring or a creek where I can use a ram pump or gravity feed to help supply my water for toilets, showers, laundry and such. Probably gonna invest in some solar panels... maybe motion sensor lights.
I know there is a spray insulation that works great, what other ideas have you heard of?

The real answer is nobody here knows anything about your topic of interest.

Outdoor Board with an "Off the grid" theme should get plenty of hits.

Brick as much as possible, an if you have an upstairs make sure the interior attic walls on the back side have blue board and tape the seams.
and energy-efficient windows.

Check out Earthships in New Mexico. My daughter worked there and Ive stayed in one. Some amazing low tech systems that can be adapted to work anywhere.

if it's a small home, look into 2 x 6 lumber in walls for starters - thicker insulation
white metal roof with insulation sheets below it plus well insulated attic saves money big time
seeing a lot more homes with solar panels in this area now

How poor are we talking here? Like, under 6 figures per year poor?

If you really want to go energy efficient I can give you my email and give you some info. I work for an electrical supplier.

Built a house two years ago, went with spray foam insulation and an aluminum foil type radiant barrier wrapping the house....my 75 year old contractor called it NASA wrap. High efficiency units.. 17 seer I think....Energy bill is about half of what it use to be with a 1000 extra square feet. I've purchase 10 100 watt solar panels to backfeed into the grid, to try and take the bill on down even further

If you have ever built a steel barn, with the pre-painted sheets of steel, they put thin Styrofoam,cloth-like pieces, between each sheet,it's a packaging material, and is meant to prevent scratching of the paint during shipping.
This stuff is incredible,If you are working even on a 70 degree day, if you get this stuff against you, you can feel the way it reflects your body heat. It feels like it is cooking you instantly.
That stuff amazes me, and I have often wondered if something similar is available for insulation.

Good info in here so far, but yes this thread will probably blow up on the OB. Plenty of folks who have built in rural areas and/or own camps where it pays to be minimal. I'd imagine more than a few have gotten creative with well water.
