I think the true number of Christians in the US would be 5% or less.

It depends on what one means by a true christian. If you're talking about the turning their lives over fully to Jesus, truly repenting of "sin", John Macarthur type of christian then its way less than 5%.
If we're just talking about those who truly believe, genuinely try and do good and go to church regularly its higher than that.
Most christians do half arse it though which makes the least sense of any decision about religion. If you claim to believe in hell and arent fully committed to a belief that supposedly saves you from it, I assert youre a goddamn lunatic.

I think that's absolutely true, and the worst part is that a vast number of the people that say they are Christians are probably fully expecting Heaven when they die because society has transformed the message of "salvation by faith" into "if you believe God exists, you're in"
The American "God" is not the God of Christian Bible.
