Actually, Texas does have a steamrolling economy. They have low unemployment despite being a high growth state which makes it harder to keep unemployment numbers low. This high growth also hurts Georgia in unemployment statistics. Louisiana is so dependent on energy/oil and chemicals that when those industries are hot their unemployment numbers are great. Louisiana is such a low growth state that keeping unemployment numbers lower is easier. Louisiana with their extremely slow growth rate up until recently actually made Alabama look like a relatively high growth state.

Btw, why wouldn't you include Huntsville (traditionally Alabama's strongest economy) or Mobile for Alabama?

I wasn't talking about the metro, per se, piglet.

Like I said, I've lived all over the country and visited even more of it.

The report comes out in September of each year. VA was #1 in 2013, Texas, in 2012.

Louisiana and Texas have the best economies in the south without a doubt. No business wants to be in a piece of shite state like Georgia or Alabama.

Yeah, unless you give a shite about logistics and need to be somewhere conveniently located. Everything traveling from the east to west coast passes through Atlanta then Memphis. This is a primary reason Birmingham has a successful economy. Also a big part of why Fed Ex is in Memphis, along with it being a central location for the US by air.

Louisiana is the absolute worst place to put a business with exception of one factor, your ports. As for the other states you mentioned, one has a huge port in Mobile and the other borders the Atlantic.

Texas is awesome. If they were an independent nation they would have something like the 13th largest economy in the world. I don't remember the exact number but I believe 13th is correct.

Louisiana continues to have a strong trend of job growth, hitting a record high for the sixth month in a row in March and exceeding 2 million employed residents for the first time ever.

While just over 2 million Louisianans were employed in March 2014, there were 93,473 unemployed, creating an unemployment rate of 4.5 percent. Although the figure was flat from the month prior, it was the best in the 17-state southern region and the seventh-lowest in the nation, according to figures released from the state labor department.

They weren't any better. I gave instructions in the OP as far as how to get the data yourself "(click links on left for other states)"

Huntsville-6.5
Mobile-8.1

The Port of New Orleans is the United States' only deep-water port served by six major railroads, which is more than any other port in the country, that give it cost-effective rail service to the destinations throughout the country. These six railroads are linked by the New Orleans Public Belt, a 25 mile long railroad. The productive private maritime industry in the Port of New Orleans helps it produce year after year and giving it the United States' largest market share for imported steel, plywood, coffee, and natural rubber.

Forbes: New Orleans is America's fastest-growing city

NEW ORLEANS -- Population-wise, New Orleans is the comeback city of the country. Forbes Magazine just ranked the Big Easy the fastest growing city in America since 2007. It had a long way to go after losing more than half its nearly 500,000 residents after Hurricane Katrina struck in 2005. Forbes credits two things for the city's rapid growth, a partial rebound effect and what is called a "striking economic revival."

There is now expected to be another wave of people flocking to New Orleans when the new University and Veterans Administration Hospitals open over the next few years in the city's emerging Bio-Medical Corridor. "We're trending in the right direction," said Hecht. "What's happening here is not just a population rebound that was going to happen, regardless. But people are voting with their feet because of the opportunity that you have in the new, New Orleans."

"I think you will see a lot of job opportunity at a high level, a high salary," said Rigamer. "You'll see people coming to fill those jobs." "The Bio-Medical Corridor certainly could attract more people from the suburban areas," said Plyer. "That's part of creating those amenities that make the city the attractive place to live rather than the suburbs."

New Orleans is the top "Brainpower City" & destination for college graduates.

By Mark Waller, NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune

The recent Forbes magazine declaration that New Orleans is the top "Brainpower City" in the United States because of growth in its number of college graduates has triggered another accolade from a national publication.

Drawing on the Forbes report, the IndustryWeek publication for the manufacturing business again listed New Orleans top among cities as a destination for college graduates.

IndustryWeek added, "Graduates can find jobs in a variety of areas as the city is investing $20 billion in six target sectors. Industries include three foundational sectors: Advanced Manufacturing Energy, International Trade and three diversifying sectors: Digital Media, BioSciences and Emerging Environmental."

For a big city, DC is a cultural backwater. Always has been. Getting better, though, I hear from my friends who still live there.
