This is an indicator Tennessee is going for an up and comer.

Established HCs do not interview, they have a presser naming them as HC after all the details are worked out in private...

As of today (Friday):

Word is Gregg Marshall would listen to Tennessee if Hart were willing to upwards of 2 mil. Guy must really dig UT. Fortunately for any SEC teams worried we might get too serious about this, the word is also that Hart won't go much higher than 2 mil which eliminates Marshall and Boyle (various sources also say Tad Boyle could also be brought to the negotiating table and would consider UT if Hart were willing to pay). Apparently we're appealing (the good news) but coaches (rightfully) aren't gonna take a pay cut or salary below their resume (the bad news).****

The names that fit with $$ rumor and are on the rumored target list:

Chris Mack
Mick Cronin
Michael White
Donnie Tyndall
Richard Pitino
Archie Miller

Rick Byrd (Tennessee alum - Belmont coach) and Will Wade (UT-Chattanooga) are two local coaches that are also on the list. They're good coaches but probably at the bottom of the list for the AD due to all the criteria.

****That said, even though VQ has reported the ~2 mil figure I'm not sure they're necessarily correct. While UT has traditionally shopped for up and comers when it comes to basketball, Dave Hart is handling the search by himself and has only made one major hire. He went after some pretty big names in the football search and after having gotten burnt with Gundy playing him against his own AD for a raise, he's not giving jack away on this search. Dave Hart has never given much to the media but he's been more tight-lipped than normal these past few months and has cleaned out athletic dept. to the point where the media doesn't have much in the way of inside sources -- not like they used to have anyway. I think they're basing their opinion wholly on the past rather than on any real info. about what Hart is willing to spend -- no one will care or remember if Hart shows up to a big name coach's house with a brink's truck and if they're right about the money limit they'll get cred. It's a pretty safe call for VQ and other sports media that follows Tennessee closely.
