It is not. It is sooo long with not that interesting/unique of a story line. seriously, 3 or so hours of spaceships and "we've lost all hope". And then they discover how to defeat them because an old guy sneezed? That is not the best sci-fi movie ever.

"One of the best", he said, and I have to agree to some point. There wasn't -that- much wrong with it scientifically, which is one of the hallmarks of the newer science fiction movies (don't get me started on Gravity).

Independence Day was one of the best popcorn movies out and was light years ahead of the rest of science fiction at the time -- I'd even dare say that it revolutionized "scale" with the smaller ships hovering over the big cities in regards to movement and depiction.

The term "sooo long" is applied best to good sex and good Sci-Fi movies. You just don't want them to end.

Some like brief sex and brief movies. Others really get into it.
