ETA: if we screwed up JW's recruitment it was by going after Gunner Kiel in parallel instead of focusing exclusively on JW

Maybe your right. I just remember hearing that Saban doesn't want his recruits playing other sports such as basketball and baseball. I knew he didn't mind other players on track.
