Bama was 6-5, Auburn was 5-6 and LSU was 4-7 that year. The Big Three in 1998 was still Auburn, Alabama and Arkansas.

LSU replaced Arkansas circa 2000, which produced an oddity that may never be repeated.

Mississippi State defeated both SEC Championship participants (Florida and Auburn) without making the championship game.

Actually Bama finished the regular season 7-4, and Auburn was 3-8. And when Arky played those three teams, their HCs were Mike DuBose, Bill Oliver and Gerry Dinardo. Which goes a long way towards explaining why the Pigs went 3-0.

Arkansas has never been part of the Big Three in the SEC West.

This was in 2000, and ya that certainly is odd that MSU beat the two division winners, considering they finished the regular season 7-4.

They lost to LSU that year, starting a 14-year streak. That might have been the problem.
