Auburn simply didn't have a good enough defense last year.

Thank you!! It finally comes out! What is the head coaches job?

Top 3 in the league because he can call plays? Again. No... IMHO, of course.

Well considering he is an offensive minded HC he wouldn't have much to do with the defense. Coaching on D wasn't the problem. It was a lack of talent. That being said, they still did very very well and almost won a natty.

It might escape you to realize this, but it was Malzahn's first year at Auburn and our defensive personnel weren't very good in a lot of areas.

The secondary was undersized and had absolutely zero depth and the linebackers were pretty pedestrian, and I'd say below average when Jake Holland took the field. The defensive line was very solid.

Part of it is Ellis Johnson's style, but we didn't play a whole lot of man coverage simply because we didn't have the guys in the secondary to make it work. We always played with a soft cushion between the 25s, and it was because we were so liable to get burned deep. Our defense was making lemonade out of some lemons, and most of the year they did a fairly decent job of it.
