Auburn University's athletics department reported a deficit of $865,994 for its 2013 fiscal year, according to the university's most recent NCAA financial report.

This marked the first time Auburn listed a deficit since AL.com began tracking college athletics financial data eight years ago. Auburn reported a surplus of $8.8 million in 2011-12, the year before Gene Chizik's disastrous final season as football coach.

Severance payments totaled $2.7 million in 2013, largely for Chizik and his staff after the Tigers went 3-9. Auburn Senior Associate Athletics Director Jack Smith said the athletics department drew upon a cash reserve of more than $15 million to cover last year's operating deficit. Alabama reported a $21.2 million surplus in 2013.

Keeping up with the Jones' can be expensive for poly-technical institutes.

Auburn also offering season tickets for 2014 only (non renewable) for only $350 and not requiring a donation. If I were an Arkansas or LSU fan, I would jump on this.

Not being able to renew this next year is because Alabama and Georgia, AU's biggest rivals will play at Jordan Hare in 2015.

Really? Did you read the article?

A single season deficit. I'd be curious to see why this was. Buyouts I presume. Which I'd gladly pay to have Bruce Pearl over Tony Barbee.

Ran a surplus in 2012.

Took the loss out of a total athletic surplus of over $15 million. That leaves surplus monies in the athletic department of over $14 million dollars.

I had always recommended Bama's business school over Auburn's. Perhaps I need to rethink that.....

yellawood and some others gonna need to stroke some checks.

This is what happens when you combine a SHITTY 2012 season with firing the HC and having to pay him and his whole staff a raft of money.

Shitty season leads to fewer season tix sold. Gus will fix the season ticket sales issue.

You have to spend money to make money in this business. Everyone knows AU is trending up. Bama is in decline.

You don't go a couple years with the worst athletic department in the conference and make a whole lot of money from it..
