I have been to some ports and factories in the middle east and can tell you this is typical treatment of migrant labor. Illegals in America have more rights and privileges than bangladeshis in Saudi Arabia or the UAE. If you are not a citizen (and there is no way to become a citizen if you are not born one, period) then you have no rights. You cannot own property, you cannot leave the country unless your employer allows it, and if you actually deign to speak to a native citizen instead of your manager (who is usually an Indian or Filipino (their manager is usually a brit/scot/aussie)) you will be beaten or worse. Wages range around a few dollars a day.

Living conditions are horrible as well if you are one of these workers. Air conditioning is ever present in the middle east, but not for you. The slums are kept carefully away from the pristine new construction, and are slums in every sense of the word.
