Are they sucked into that rhetoric, or so turned off by the other side though? As I stated earlier, 2008 was the first election I didn't cast a vote in, since I could vote. I was disgusted with the choices from both sides.

It's a bit of both. Being turned off by the other side makes it easier to get sucked into the rhetoric. It's a never ending cycle of political rage.
I see that now with 2008, the choices were terrible. I voted Obama in 2008, because I was 19 and overly optimistic about the world. The resulting six years has made me much more cynical.
