quote:

It was a quite a visit. Del Conte grabbed a car, a driver and a bunch of reference material, binders, extolling the advantages of TCU and Fort Worth.

“I get up at 8 o'clock in the morning and drive to Darrell K. Royal Stadium. I get to [Dodds'] office. Nine comes around, 10 comes around. I've got a GA [graduate assistant] outside waiting for me, by the way. I tell him, ‘Just wait 10 minutes I'll be back.' Pretty soon it's 3:30.

“[DeLoss] comes out and says, ‘Who are you?' Chris Del Conte, Texas Christian U. He doesn't hear ‘Chris.' he hears ‘Del'. ‘Del, let's go get ourselves a drink and discuss it.'

“We went to a restaurant and had a little libation at 3:30. By the time 8:30 rolls around, we were [into it] pretty good but we got ourselves in a situation. I kept trying to give him my [binders]. He said, ‘I've heard enough, Del' and just walked away.”

The Big 12 ADs had a conference call the next day.

TCU looks like an upgrade when you have beer goggles apparently.

I'll never forget being lectured by an OU fan (a guy whom I respect, but disagreed with on football matters, obviously) about how the big12 made the right move in "letting" A&M/Mizzou go and adding TCU/WVU.

Upgrades, indeed. For the former pair of schools.

Geez, if ever there was more conformation Dodds needed to be put out to pasture. Not b/c they eventually went with TCU when it would have made better sense to get Louisville or Cincy to give WVU a travel partner but b/c DeLoss was so out of the loop he didn't even know TCUs ADs name nor could he be bothered to do a quick info check before he talked to the guy after making him wait several hours outside his office.

You would think the AD at Texas should know the names of every other Texas based FBS and FCS AD in the state he had worked in for 30+ fricking years.

Are they ever gonna get back to 12 and get a championship game? The landscape is kind of picked over but they lose a ton of exposure without it.

Sorry to quote myself, but there is one funny part of the article I missed:

quote:

Chris Del Conte remains perhaps the most outgoing person on the planet. He and his school remain forever indebted to perhaps the most powerful (former) AD on the planet.

Someone needs to tell TCU the GOR doesn't last forever.

T+1 for me.

Generally, you need a couple of years in order to grasp proper perspective and understand the players and motives behind their actions. It's rare that a near unanimous chorus sees such a monumental poor strategic series of choices as Texas' maneuvering through realignment.

Perhaps there is a hidden plot element in their favor that has yet to be introduced. Again, we lack distance and perspective, so I concede that point.

But, right now, they are looking near dead in the water and they are taking on massive amounts of water. Assuming there is no hidden plot twist, the distance and perspective will only heighten and clarify the errors of Belmont's ways.
