No they didn't. That LSU team averaged 261 yards a game in total defense and gave up 533 to WVU.

Let's not start this argument.
Giving up 465 passing yards and 21 points isn't exactly shutting a team down. Those weren't garbage time yards or points; West Virginia was initiating a comeback. I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Chavis' defense is good at forcing turnovers versus HUNH teams.
What is the precise definition of shutdown?
Yards must be taken into account, but they don't always tell the whole story.
Oregon shutout Arizona in 2012, but it's because they forced several red zone turnovers.
