I've never been to either one.

Which is better for a short visit, and which is better to live in, if different than best to visit?

What are the people like?

Food is better in Austin.
Cost of living is better in Austin.
Only bad thing about Austin is all the Utex fans.

Have been to both, but spent much more time in Nashville.
I like it much better than Austin.

I am in Austin every two weeks.

It's a lot of fun to visit but most of it gets old quick.

Snobbiest town I know of and I'm including Dallas and NYC. Terrible traffic for a town its size. High cost of living. Yuppies and pan handlers.

On the flip side, amazing local talent, great bar scene, tons of awesome parks, best music scene in the country, and good food.

If you're a single dude, move there, slay tail, get married, and leave.

I've spent 3 smears and one winter break in Nashville and it's awesome. If I could find a job there I'd be gone in a second.

I've been to Austin twice and it seems like an alright place but nothing that really tickles my pickle

Been to both for extended periods.

Both are very cool in their own ways, both on my radar to move to.

Austin is probably the new Nashville when it comes to the music scene, many musicians have made this comment.

I'd rather live in Austin under the age of 35, would probably prefer Nashville over 35.

I happen to like both a lot, but I'm much more familiar with Austin, and I love mexican food so I'd give austin a slight edge. But Jesus Christ the summers are terrible. Too fricking hot.

Music and food are better in Austin. Nightlife is about the same in my limited experience. Nashville traffic is better and getting around is easier. Both have hobos.

The biggest difference for me is that pretty much nothing you'd ever want to do in Texas is more than 4 hours away from Austin. It is as well placed a city relative to others as any in the country.

Nashville, all day every day, for a short visit, or even better, indefinitely. Each time I've been, I've never wanted to leave. I would thoroughly love to live there, or just outside of it in Franklin.

There is no comparison to Austin, imo. The music is by far superior in Nashville - premium talent all over the place - the food is consistently better, the climate is better, it's spotless & beautiful, the suburbs are superior, it's very easy to get around downtown & outlying areas, and the people are extremely nice. Oh, and Vandy >>>>>>> UT.

I lived in Nashville for 20 years. I really have no idea why people are praising Nashville. It's good place to raise your kids I guess.

How many Wal-Mart Nashville got?

But seriously, Nashville is a cool city. There are still local bands that play good music at the bars...it's not all pop like at places like Tootsie's. I've always had a good time.

I live in Austin (grew up in Baton Rouge), and I don't understand all the comments saying Austin is pretentious. It is one of the least pretentious cities I've been to,especially compared to BRLA. Unless posters are confusing smugness with pretentious, bc there are definitely some smug people here, but not a lot of pretention.

Nashville is a great city too, but I think Austin is better (music, food, outdoors, quality of life) although Austin was cooler 7-10 years ago. It's growing so fast and losing its charm I'm worried it will be like Houston or Dallas.
