wish he would have just STFU. Not because he is gay, but because this will be front page for a long long time

He didn't have much choice because NFL scouts already knew and if he didn't break the story himself it was gonna come out in the media anyway. Make no mistake, this was a very calculated move by Sam and probably his agent to get out ahead of the story and own it rather than it be written about in national media *without* him coming out. If the latter had happened, then not only is he gay, he was a gay person who was trying to hide that fact from NFL executives looking at drafting him, potentially setting them up for a later PR circus that they hadn't signed on for. This was the classier move on his part to just let all potential employers know exactly what they are getting and they can make decisions about it however they wish.

I've heard his agent interviewed twice now and Sam wanted to wait until after the Draft to announce.

Then he went to the Senior Bowl and realized by the questions he was being asked that the cat was out of the bag. Things intensified and he moved it up twice more, culminating in the announcement Sunday.

As far as negative recruiting... Who really gives a damn? It's not like it's not going on everywhere.
