Simple answer? When the SEC was looking for a team in SC we were unaligned with a conference while Clemson was still in the ACC. If Clemson had bolted the ACC when we did (as they were supposed to...) they would probably have been chosen over us.

Thanks. It wasn't a troll. I'm sincerely interested in the history of the decision. Arkansas joining too.
