Heard what Hal Mumme had to say at his presser today on the SEC. He said the key to SEC teams are the defensive ends and cornerbacks. Smaller schools rely on one athletic safety to make the plays.
Thoughts? Does Ole Miss have the DE's and corners to catch the top of the SEC?

DE's...for the next two years...absolutely.
CB's...maybe. Hilton was an animal this season and Jones looked real nice.

The starters are probably good enough. The depth, not so much, especially at the CB.

Exactly. These recruiting classes are huge to our success. Gotta have depth to make it in the SEC.

When he was first hired, Hugh Freeze said that he felt the keys to success in football were to have a good DL and a good quarterback (then he said something really Hugh Freeze-ish about having a good attitude).

That more sounds like a quote from Hal Mumme's buddy Joe Lee Dunn.
I am not sure what would make anything coming out of Mumme insightful though considering it didn't pan out well in the SEC and has been steadily dropping divisions. Isn't he D3 now?

Controlling the line off scrimmage is key to any football game. DL and offensive line. If you can pressure the QB with 4 lineman, it makes the secondary look better than they are. Very few QB's and can do what Peyton Manning does, get rid of the ball in less than 3 seconds.
If you control the line of scrimmage, then running the ball is futile.
On the other hand if the offensive line is controlling the line of scrimmage, any play you call looks like the right play call. Hence Alabama's success.
We need depth on the defensive line and the offensive line. They need to be 4 and 5 star talent in order to compete.
I believe Freeze and his staff are well on their way to getting that depth.

Mumme is now D4.
But he did beat Bama and LSU while the coach of bottom dwelling Kentucky. And his QB was the No. 1 draft pick.
And he had some recruiting violations . . .

Groundbreaking.
I may be a little biased against Mumme though. I'm not even mad about him cheating at Kentucky. I'm just mad he was too dumb to get away with it.

Yeah, the AP sportswriter who asked the question, David Brandt, was impressed and had some followup questions.
