When have you ever seen Saban calling plays on defense? Yeah, it's his defense/scheme, but Smart actually calls the plays during the game. I'm sure that Saban might tell him to call certain things (like blitzes) in certain situations just like I'm sure he does with the offensive coaches in certain situations. But Smart is the one that actually calls the plays.
