there's only one good way to do this

step 1: tell your players - hopefully you have the opportunity for a meeting but if you don't send a text, send a fricking email, but do it THAT day

step 2: say you had a good time at the school and leave it at that - anything else you do is pissing in a wound

Can't believe I'm about to say this... but he's managed to make Kiffin look like an amateur when it comes to doing a school dirty right before signing day.

I posted something similar the other day on the recruiting board.

In my eyes, Franklin is right up there with Kiffin and Yaw Yaw when it comes to being a complete unethical scum ball piece of shite.

One horrible recruiting class is all it really takes to sink you to the bottom of tSEC for years. Vandy made more progress in the last 3 years than they had in the previous 50 and this is gonna knock them right back down, I'm afraid.

I don't hate Vandy. Their recent success is not the reason Tennessee has been in the gutter for 6 years now. I have always hated Franklin, though.

He did. The coaches and players had a meeting Saturday morning before Franklin left for PSU. About 1000 Vandy fans showed up outside McGugin to support the players. Franklin snuck in and out while an assistants wife attended in a PSU track suit.

When you've been downwind of the nuclear fallout as recently as we have, I suppose it changes your outlook. I don't think I'll ever be able to stomach a coach who does something similar to Kiffin/Orgeron/Franklin. I know now what it means in reality instead of just in theory or at the intellectual level.

I mean, we all knew we were gonna be set back a few years when Kiffin pulled his night flight but did we really believe it would be this bad or this long? I didn't. I didn't come close to truly 'getting' the damage being done until much later. It was more an intellectual understanding that things were going to be bad but then experience and real world observation of the damage (so far as football goes, anyway) showed me what that truly meant and how awful the reality they created through their choices/sleazy actions really was and would be into the near term.

Understanding 'it's bad' theoretically or from an academic frame of mind doesn't come close to really grasping the damage or the scummy nature of a coach who chooses to handle things the wrong way.

I'm ok with coaching changes and taking a few recruits with you but these guys all went beyond that. And when you put programs into such a bad position that it'll take them years to recover when you could've just as easily done things the right way, you're like a piece of dog shite that keeps sticking to someone's shoes and stains the new carpet every time it's cleaned or replaced.

Stunts like that cause fans heartache but also wind up costing schools time, money, 'brand,' valuable casual fans, tickets/merch sales and so many other valuable things.

Google brought up A&M and Boise but was sparse on details. What happened with that one?

Marcel Yates (former A&M DB coach) is now the Defensive Coordinator for Boise. A GA for A&M (Ward, I think) who used to be at West Mesquite (DSG's High School), for all intents and purposes started steering DSG to Boise hoping that Yates would give him the DB coach job as a result. The week of the Duke game, Sumlin found out about it and fired Ward on the spot.

Basically, DSG committed to Yates, not A&M, and went to Boise after never having taken an official visit or setting foot in Idaho and enrolled early.

Penn St screwed.
We know about hiring a Vandy coach. They just got Dinardo'ed. If PSU had a chance to come back, just ended.

I have to admit, if his time in Happy Valley is a giant clusterfrick, I would enjoy it. If he had left in a decent fashion, I would have wished him all the best. I honestly thought it would be cool to see him go win a Natty. Then he pulled his shite.

I realize you're trying to stir the pot but I've never hated Vandy.

There have always been a few Vol fans that have and they did so long before Franklin arrived and will continue now that he's gone just like there have always been a few Vandy fans who hate us with an undying passion but both groups are in the minority and for the most part they're Middle Tennesseans who listen to way too much Nashville Sports Radio which lives to try and create controversy.

Segments of both have always gotten obsessed with one another due mostly to proximity for those who live/work in Nashville. That too is older than Franklin -- it's as old as the first time the teams met. Franklin didn't bring out any new hate on either side - he didn't even bring out cockiness in diehard Vandy fans as it's always been there when it comes to Tennessee. Anyone who has ever been to a Tennessee Vandy game can tell you that 99 percent of the time those guys are playing to kill one another but not off the field. However, the segment of Vandy-torturing UT fans and Vandy's own version designed to torture Vol fans are pretty microscopic on both sides.

We're not Bama and Aubie, Aggy and Texas, or even USC and Clemson. Very few fans of either team have any real ill-will for one another and we're certainly not going to poison anyone's trees or shoot someone for not being upset enough over a game.

How in the hell am I gonna hate against a QB from just up the road like Patton Robinette when I'm happy he's 1. playing SEC FB 2. thrilled he's getting a good education and 3. have a high likelihood of knowing him, his relatives, parents, and/or friends personally? How in the hell is Vandy supposed to hate me (in real life anyway) when I've taught some of their students at the collegiate level and have several friends who went there? It's just not going to happen except among the knuckledraggers of either fan base who aren't worth the time of day no matter what.

You can't project other SEC 'rivalries' onto UT-Vandy with much accuracy at all.

I agree with you there. If he'd handled things the right way then it would be a non-issue (painful for y'all) but ultimately something you get over and someone you might even still cheer for. However, how you leave matters and what he's done is deserving of karmic retribution.

Vanderbilt being a private school is what makes this happen. If both were public, the hatred could develop. However, the people who grow up Vandy fans (whether legacy, or just living in Nashville with no one to make them a UT fan) can't always get into Vanderbilt OR pay for it. The disparity in football hasn't helped build the disdain either. It's just a different animal.

And what a dumbass move to have it paid by Penn State. Guy just signed a $27 million deal and couldn't come up with a couple thousand to pay for it himself. No problem with him leaving for Penn State...but this was a fail on his part.

I think he and Penn State deserve each other. It is what happens when you really do not clean house.

I agree that the football disparity hasn't grown it into a real level of wicked hate but I we're also a mellow kinda state too. Some of it is that Tennessee is the Upper South and just culturally different. Some of it is like you say, due to Vanderbilt being a private school as I think if our dumbass legislature fought over funding it could definitely create an unbearable rivalry that would make even our current level of statehouse stupidity look petty and moronic. Personally, I've always enjoyed the fact we've been fortunate enough to have our schools specialize in separate things -- the hospitals are a great example of that. If I suffer a burn fly my arse to Vandy ASAP but if I get shot fly me to UT's trauma center ASAP.

In a lot of ways, we get the best of both worlds because the two have chosen to take separate paths in terms of being great at certain fields.

As for money issues... I'm hopeful that the trend/experiment of tuition freezes, sliding scale tuition, and even free education for admitted students a few of the Ivies have implemented will make it's way down here and across the country. Something's gotta give when it comes to the ever increasing cost of higher ed and the burden student loans and student loan defaults have placed not just on students and their families but also on the entire US economy. We've created an economic drag that we've got to find a solution for one way or another. The baby boomers, and those before them, could work summer jobs and 20 hr jobs at their school and cover all their expenses (tuition, room, board, and books) but that's pretty much impossible now.

The sign of a good coach is how much your rivals hated him.

Just look at Kiffin.
