People love the tournament, but it's a really shitty way to pick a champion.
It renders almost every game in the regular season mostly meaningless.
It only exists because people like to play office pools on it, it's fun, it's like a carnival event.
I mean heck it's called Mach Madness for a reason. I enjoy it myself.
But from a competitive sports viewpoint its horrible.

It is, but it's a necessary evil in many ways. Does it need to be 68 teams? No, that part is overkill, but it is a lot harder in basketball to just say "ok, you two, play a national title game." Basketball is also much more "day by day" than football. Football results likely wouldn't change in MOST cases if the two teams played again tomorrow (assuming no major injuries or adjustments made). However, in basketball, sometimes a guy just has a red hot or ice cold shooting night. Things like that make a tournament that tests teams repeatedly a necessary evil.
Sure, sometimes the "best" team getes weeded out by an unlucky bad game while the lesser team has a great night. It is a lot better than trying to pick two basketball teams in America to square off in a national championship game without a tournament though.
