There was not a single man between Madden and the basket when he released the ball. That is a pretty open look.

If Mizzou made that exact same shot to win the game you would be pissed for the poor defense and "open" look that they got

When he started that shot, he was directly in front of the tallest player on the court who had his hands straight up in the air. Do you not see the position he had to get in just to get a clear look at the basket? That's not open. By that logic, any shot is "open" if someone leans a little.

Look at how the entire Mizzou team committed to stopping that layup. All he has to do is kick it to #1 and he has the option to either take that wide open midrange jumper or even take a few steps in and bank it off the glass. Taking that shot was the worst option he had.
