I mean honestly, Qualls got lucky for the lane violation on his FT or we wouldn't have been in position to win it anyways. He has had several game winning shots for us, but Madden had some huge threes late against Florida to send it to OT too, we just didn't win. He's been clutch for us too at times but it didn't go our way today
And he's an 80% FT shooter so idk where that came from

I'd say Qualls and Portis are the best players, and what I'd like to see is a play at some point with screens and back cuts etc
There was a screen, set by Clarke around the free throw line. Mizzou overloaded the screen side of the zone, when the defender on the offside jumped the passing lane to Qualls it left Madden the lane. It was a well executed play.

I'm sorry but that layup was nowhere near open.
There was not a single man between Madden and the basket when he released the ball. That is a pretty open look.
If Mizzou made that exact same shot to win the game you would be pissed for the poor defense and "open" look that they got

Look, you can focus on the last play and dissect it and conclude as to why it didn't work, etc.
But the previous two defensive possessions is what lost the game, the first Portis needlessly fouled by dropping his arms down, he was in the right position and the shot actually hit the bottom of the back board from the driver being out of control towards the basket, he keeps his arms strait up and that is a no call 90% of the time.
The next position Clark was late to rotate to help defend the basket giving up an easy lay up.
Sound defense on either one of those possessions and we are not having this discussion.

When was I proved wrong exactly? We have differing opinions on the final few plays, there's no correct answer.
I'm just not a fan of under .500 basketball in a shitty conference personally. That's what this thread is about, underachieving in the eyes of some of us. To say we haven't underachieved this season is BS, yet you're in here defending it

Agreed. Honestly, I think the major problem with this team is that we're not very smart. Too many dumb mistakes in every facet of the game, and it adds up to losses in the end
Posted on 2/13/14 at 11:57 pm to Hubbhogg
They make a bunch of Freshmen and Sophomore mistakes, but that goes along with relying on freshmen and sophomores.

Great players have basketball IQ ingrained though, and I don't see a single kid like that on our roster. I think Portis will be a pro b/c of raw talent and size. Qualls maybe b/c of athletiscm, but we don't have a high bball IQ player on the roster currently IMO

Proved wrong may not be the correct wording. Shown differently?
You said that you wanted to see a screen on the last play. I showed you that there was and you make some smart arse reply.
I don't think anyone is happy with the results, but it is what it is. This program was worse than a dumpster fire and it's going to take more than 2 recruiting classes to get out of it, especially when kids can't be cut loose.

There aren't many of those kids coming to a football conference to play basketball.

There are a couple, but they are 6'0" tall.
The biggest issue up to the point, besides defensive breakdowns which are going to happen when you play aggressively, has been shot selection.
It has improved, it isn't perfect, but there is less times during the game I want to throw shite because of a dumb fricking shot taken 4 seconds into the clock.

quote:When he started that shot, he was directly in front of the tallest player on the court who had his hands straight up in the air. Do you not see the position he had to get in just to get a clear look at the basket? That's not open. By that logic, any shot is "open" if someone leans a little.

Look at how the entire Mizzou team committed to stopping that layup. All he has to do is kick it to #1 and he has the option to either take that wide open midrange jumper or even take a few steps in and bank it off the glass. Taking that shot was the worst option he had.

It was drawn up to get him to the rim, that's about as good a shot you're going to get at the rim at the buzzer. I would take that shot 100 times before the shots he took against Kentucky and Georgia.
He could have probably pulled up a little earlier like he did vs Vanderbilt and kicked it out, but hindsight is 20/20.

I've always thought that was silly. I've been in locker rooms where that was a prevailing thought and it was a shitty vibe, a pay dues, pay respect kind of thing when really everyone should just be cool with each other and know everyone is working toward a common goal in improving the organization.

Not a bad thing in my book, and it's what's needed to break up a GOBN strangling competitiveness out of a program.

His rosters have been made up of talent players, mainly JUCOs, fine except those same players would not have qualified for SEC play.
This there is no rebuttal for, maybe the SEC isn't geared for success in basketball where the best players typically come from inner cities where basketball is one of the few options for them and school isn't that important because they all hope to be one and dones and the corrupt AAU and prep school system already has their hooks into kids looking to cash hoop checks not ace chem tests.

The ball was in his hand, no more than 4 feet from the rim (my estimation), with nothing directly between the ball and the rim. Can't ask for a whole lot more than that. Got jostled enough to throw off the shot a little, just didn't make it.
We are not turning the corner just yet, but I think we are starting into the curve.
Hope Qualls and Madden hang around one more year, if they don't it's a step backwards I think.

This.
That's exactly the position we wanted to be in. 80-90% of the time you're either going to make that layup, get a foul called, or get a rebound with an easy put back.

This makes me think you don't watch much Arkansas basketball.
#1 = Mardracus Wade.
Even if you knew that and were just using short hand... you really want the ball in Mardracus Wade's hands with < 5 seconds left?
