I fail to see why bringing an illiterate kid up to speed at a major university is a bad thing. At worst, a student athlete leaves the university better off than where they were when they got there. At best, they make like Aaron Murray and emerge 4+ years later with a post-grad degree and no debt.
Why is this bad?

Exactly. God forbid a poor kid from the ghetto learn how to read and earn a degree in college.
According to CNN they shouldn't be in college.
