The article is about players not being able to read. In fact, found a high percentage should not even be in college.

CNN chose a sampling of public universities where open records laws apply. We sought data from a total of 37 institutions, of which 21 schools responded. The others denied our request for entrance exam or aptitude test scores, some saying the information did not exist and others citing privacy rules. Some simply did not provide it in time.

Some sec schools did not comply. Auburn being but one.

University of Alabama

Alabama says it does not keep records, or track in any way, entrance exam scores or results of reading evaluations for athletes. The university also says it does not have a process for "special admits." There is one reading specialist on staff who works with athletes.

Trooof.

What about High Schools? How are these dudes getting through high school without learning basics.

Plenty of blame to go around.

The bomb isn't being dropped on college sports; it's directed at K-12 education. The gap between what these kids know upon HS graduation and what they should know when entering an institution of higher education is growing larger.

The fact that these kids are functionally illiterate is a societal problem; not a collegiate one. It is not the charge of IHEs to teach basic reading and writing.

So is it CNN's point that these kids would be better served without the opportunity to play football at a major university? I suppose they could always get a job at McDonald's.

As long as they can read a play book, who cares? Most of these kids go to college to play football for one reason, and it isn't to get a quality education. Sorry to burst CNN's bubble.

I take it the players can't read all the signs fans are holding up at games. That's kinda funny.

From what I read, it sounded like Auburn told them they would give them the information requested as soon as they could, but they were currently swamped with a backlog of FOIA requests they had to fulfill first.

There were multiple institutions that just flat out told them "We don't keep any records on stuff like that, go pound sand" (paraphrasing, obviously)

I hated math; truthfully I sucked at it, and I chose a major based on the least amount of math classes.

Ah it's not just athletes, I'm a product of a Georgia primary/secondary education and an SEC university and I too am functionally illterate but it hasn't affect my life negatively or anything...it's almost an advantage on the rant.
